Do not withhold your mercy from me, O LORD; may your love and your truth always protect me. (NIV)
This is a cry from the Psalmist for God’s mercy, love, truth and protection. We too at times in our lives must learn to make our plea to God for all of these things and more. Many people have bought into the lies of the enemy and do not cry out to, beseech or plea to God for the things that only God can provide. I don’t know if it is fear, pride or being to intimidated to approach God about our needs, but we must learn to get past that kind of mentality and behavior. God already knows our needs before we ask Him but God desires that we, out of our personal relationship with Him, approach Him about everything that we need. We need to tell God our needs even though He knows our needs. It is very therapeutic to converse with God and it is also a great move of faith to do so as well. Surely we would not talk to God about something if we did not believe, even a little bit, that He could do something about it. When we come to God in this way it moves God to move on our behalf.
The love and truth of God will always protect us. One of the functions of love and truth is protection among other things. Let us remember that love and truth are synonymous with Jesus Christ who is love, since He is God and God is love, and He is truth because He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. When the Psalmist was asking for God’s love and truth to provide constant protection they were actually asking for Christ. When we receive Christ as the Savior and Messiah we receive God’s love, truth, mercy and protection. There is another component to this passage and that is that when we live in God’s love and truth that God will protect us no matter what the situation is. For instance, when we are in the workplace and we operate our daily business in God’s love and truth there is no situation that God will not protect us from. This is why it is of most importance that we LIVE Christian lives that exhibit God’s love (We must love God and our neighbor) and His truth (operate in integrity and with Christian character) this puts protection on our lives always.
If you are like the Psalmist and are in need of God’s mercy, love, truth and protection then cry out to Him and ask Him for it and God will grant it to you. When you have received it then begin to exhibit it in your own life and share it with whoever God puts in your path.
