Are My Words and Thoughts Acceptable to God?

Scripture:  Psalm 19:14 (NIV)

Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer. (NIV)

This is a very familiar passage to many Christians. The Psalmist is very clear in the message of this verse but too often we are not clear of the level of holiness that it challenges us to reach. There is a challenge to every person who utters these words to live up to them and to do it in the sight of God and to do it acceptably. Our words are so powerful and can bring death or life to any situation or circumstance that we face (Proverbs 18:21). We have to always be aware of the simple fact that God hears all that we say and the words that we allow to come from our mouths. Whether they are good or bad, appropriate or inappropriate God hears them all. This is why it is extremely important that we the words we speak are acceptable to God. It is a great practice to not say anything that you would not say in the presence of God. After all, you are in God’s presence always.

So when we have the temptation to speak negatively about others, or speak death to our own situations and talk down our God-given visions, plans and purposes remember God is listening and that kind of talk is not acceptable. God created us to in His image and likeness (Genesis 1:26) and whatever God speaks happens so stop speaking negative words and death to your life and others start speaking what would please God and that is life. Get positive words in your vocabulary and speak them continually over your life, your relationships, finances and anything else that God would want to see positive things take place in (that would be everything). Negative words are not acceptable to God for they speak death and fear into existence. The words that we speak are an overflow of our heart (Matthew 12:34 and Luke 6:45). That means there is more where that came from whether it is positive or negative, life or death. This is why it is so important to see that this passage is after both the words of our mouth and the meditation of our heart (which is our thought process - Proverbs 23:7). These two things go together and they both must be acceptable to God.

The tricky thing about our thought life and the meditations of our heart are that they are often hidden from the outside world until we open our mouths, but even when kept hidden they must be acceptable to God. The things that we meditate on (continually ponder or think about) are of great importance to God and our existence, as they will begin to shape the form of our behavior, our outlook on life and our words. If you ever observe negative people you will notice that they not only talk negative but think and act that way as well. It is also that way with positive people they talk positive, think positive and speak positive. You will get the results that you meditate on because they will transfer to your words and behavior. Psalm 1:2 tells us that the blessed person delights in and meditates on God’s word day and night; this is truly acceptable to God. The reason they are blessed is because their meditation leads to blessed thoughts, blessed words and blessed behavior. Tell yourself that from this day forward you will no longer participate in negative, defeated, or death-filled words coming from your mouth, as thoughts in your mind or meditations in your heart. Say that you will only speak, think, meditate and act on what is acceptable to God.

Challenge:

Speak and think positive things only. Meditate on God’s word and let it be continually in your heart, mind and mouth.
