Keeping Your Life Pure

Scripture: Psalms 119:9-16

9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. 10 I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. 11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. 12 Praise be to you, O LORD; teach me your decrees. 13 With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. 14 I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. 15 I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. 16 I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.

Psalm 119In this particular passage of scripture a question is asked and answered that should be of great concern to the believer. How do I keep my way pure? Think of way like this: The path that I take everyday of my life. Each day we ought to be challenged to keep our path pure, according to God’s standards not ours. The answer in this passage is given and it is very simple, by living according to the Word of God (vs.9). While it is a simple answer it is not so simple to execute some days and that is why this passage goes on to give us some helpful ways to keep our ways pure.

1. Seek God with your WHOLE Heart- too often we give God a quarter or half but not our whole heart and that leaves us vulnerable to evil. After all, if God does not have our whole heart then who is it that has what we have not given to God?

2. Hide God’s Word in your Heart-this is so important to living and leading a pure life. God’s Word is precious and deserves to be kept in the treasure chest of your heart. The purpose of this is not to lock it away and not use it but to keep it from being tainted and tampered with and to know where it is at all times for your use against sin. It is your most valuable and effective weapon against evil.

3. Learn, Remember and Meditate on God’s Word-the willingness to learn, remember and meditate on God’s Word immediately put you in a position to keep your way pure. God loves it when we hunger and thirst for His Word not only to get it but to keep it present in our thoughts, mouths and our hearts which leads to actions, behavior and lifestyles that are pure in God’s eyes. Learning, Remembering and Meditating on God’s Word keeps God actively present in your life and there is no room for evil to operate.

4. Rejoice and Delight in Obeying God’s Word-this is often hard for even believers to do, but it is key in furthering the purity of your walk with God. When we realize that God is not asking us to obey Him to cause us pain but actually to bring us to a place of pleasure then obedience becomes something to rejoice about and delight in. When we get to a point in our life where we can find the joy and delight in obeying God and His Word like we would in great riches (vs. 14) then our way will truly be pure.

This week deliberately seek to keep the path of your life pure by living your life according to the Word of God.
